Introduction
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), also known as the Messenger of God, was born in Mecca in the year 570 CE. He was a member of the Quraysh tribe, and his life and teachings have had a profound impact on the world and continue to be of great significance to Muslims today.
Early Life and Career
Muhammad (ﷺ) was born into a time of great social and political upheaval in the Arabian Peninsula. He was orphaned at a young age and raised by his uncle, and as a young man, he worked as a trader, traveling extensively throughout the region.
During his travels, Muhammad (ﷺ) was struck by the poverty, suffering, and injustice that he saw, and he began to spend long hours in meditation and contemplation, seeking a solution to these problems. Eventually, he received a series of revelations from God that would change the course of his life and the world forever.
Revelation and Prophetic Mission
According to Islamic tradition, Muhammad (ﷺ) was 40 years old when he received his first revelation from God, who spoke to him through the angel Gabriel. Over the next 23 years, he received many more revelations, which were later compiled into the holy book of Islam, the Quran.
Muhammad's revelations were a call to action, urging people to reject the idol worship and moral corruption of their time and to return to the worship of one true God. He also received instructions on how to live a righteous and just life, and he began to preach these teachings to those around him.
Despite initial resistance and opposition, Muhammad's message gradually gained traction, and he gained a large following of followers, many of whom were from the lower and marginalized classes of society.
Hijra and the Establishment of Islam in Medina
As opposition to Muhammad (ﷺ) and his followers grew, he and his followers were forced to leave Mecca and seek refuge in Medina in the year 622 CE. This event, known as the Hijra, marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and is seen as the birth of the Muslim community.
In Medina, Muhammad (ﷺ) was able to establish a community based on the principles of Islam and the teachings of the Quran. He signed a treaty with the Jews of Medina, granting them religious freedom and protection, and his followers continued to grow in numbers.
